Born on August 31st, 1994, Suzana Laşcu is a Jazz Vocalist/Performer & Composer/Songwriter. At the age of 8, immediately after she decided to become a singer and pursue a career in music, she started learning music professionally.
She has graduated from the Bucharest School of Art, where she has studied Pop Singing from 2006 to 2009. Up to this date, she had already been experimenting with Soul and R&B music. Between 2009 and 2013 she attended Jazz Studies at the “George Enescu” High School of Music, but she had already been a pupil of the institution since 2004. She graduated in 2013 as a valedictorian, with a perfect 10.
In 2013 she started her studies in vocal jazz performance and composition at the Prins Claus Conservatorium in Groningen, the Netherlands. In 2014, she has been contributing with some songwriting to King Deluxe, a Canadian-based independent label which promotes alternative electronic music. She has also started working on her most elaborate project to date: Trippin’ With Kandinsky, written for a jazz octet. In 2015, she has been selected to perform with the Nationaal Jeugd Jazz Orkest in the Netherlands, under the artistic direction of Martin Fondse, a project which toured throughout the country to highly acclaimed venues, such as Bimhuis, Radio Kootwijk, The EYE, De Wereld Draait Door; the orchestra had collaborations with the Nationaal Jeugd Orkest as well as the Metropole Orkest, appeared on national TV channels such as NPO, NOS, VARA, and was nominated for the Zilveren Notekraker in the same year. She likes to take liberties in her own music, oftentimes being attracted to the avant-garde movement. In 2017 she graduated with honors from Prins Claus Conservatorium in Groningen, and she is currently studying jazz composition at Codarts in Rotterdam.
Having been active in the jazz idiom since she was 15, Suzana didn't only experiment with the traditional side of it, but also became involved with the avant-garde movement. Her vocal range is four octaves, as she studied bel canto technique during high school. When it comes to improvising, apart from the post-bop approach, she might also go into free and acid jazz, punk jazz and alternative rock.
Most notable projects she’s been involved in: Brains On Fluffy Pillows, Silk Copper Plastic, The Awfully Intriguing Ensemble, Counterblue, Nationaal Jeugd Jazz Orkest (with whom she released a record in 2016).
Some of her music teachers throughout the years have been: JD Walter, Deborah Brown, Deborah J. Carter, Marjorie Barnes, Floor van Zutphen, Francien van Tuinen, Ruben Hein, Renske Taminiau, Kristina Fuchs, Michael Moore, Tineke Postma, Jasper Soffers, Florin Răducanu, Mircea Tiberian, Alex Simu, Dumitru Avakian, Mihaela Drăgoi, Liliana Dumitrache, Viorela Filip, Zsolt Kerestely, Dan Dimitriu, Cristina Livezeanu, Iuliana Nicolae, people to whom she will always be grateful for helping her to master her craft and musicianship. The instruments which she is continuously learning to play and on which she would like to perform in the future are the piano, guitar, ukulele, banjo, harp, bass.
